Good flour tortillas are my #1 pick for tacos and always have been since I was a child growing up in Houston. If I have the choice between a "meh" store-bought flour tortilla and a corn tortilla, I'd rather go with the corn tortilla, to be honest.
A "meh" flour tortilla is not worth the extra calories, in my opinion.
A top-notch flour tortilla is 100% worth the calories, though! So, you have my permission to be picky about your tortillas. I hope these tips help!
#1 - Semi-cooked flour tortillas
If you can find raw flour tortillas, those have the best flavor and texture! They take a little bit longer to cook on the skillet, but they taste amazing.
Our favorite semi-cooked flour tortilla brands:
- Tortilla Fresca or Tortilla Land raw flour tortillas are available at Costco, HEB and Walmart - These are 100% the ones I go for whenever possible. We buy them at Costco and they come in a large fajita size. They're truly the next best thing to making your tortillas from scratch.
- La Abuela raw flour tortillas from Aldi come in second place for convenience. They are also smaller so better for standard-sized tacos.
- Guerrero semi-cooked flour tortillas will also work, but the taste is not as good as Tortilla Land.
#2 - Freshly made store-bought tortillas
- H-E-B is a major grocery store here in Texas (and throughout the South now). They are famous for their butter tortillas, but they also make standard flour tortillas and wheat tortillas from scratch, in store, daily. They are delicious and I may or may not have been known to snack on one or two while shopping, if they're hot in the package. ๐คค
- Kroger's tortillas are fluffier than H-E-B's, so if you like that, go with theirs instead. I prefer a chewier texture, so my go-to is H-E-B.
- Taqueria - Do you love the taste of the tortillas at your local taqueria or Mexican restaurant? Ask them if they sell them by the dozen. If they do, take some home for your tacos that week.
- Taco Cabana - Do you have a Taco Cabana near you? They sell tortillas by the dozen and they are delicious, since they make them onsite.
Check the ingredients
Traditionally flour tortillas are made with lard. So, be sure to look at the ingredients (or ask your server) what they're made with, if you are vegan.
Many flour tortillas are made with vegetable oil or vegetable shortening now.
Re-heating flour tortillas
When you get those flour tortillas home from the store, be sure to refrigerate them if you want them to last all week.
When you're ready to use them, stack a few tortillas on a plate. Then, microwave for 10 seconds. Flip the tortillas. Microwave again for 10 seconds. Repeat until they are hot.
You can also reheat tortillas individually on a hot skillet for a few seconds on each side over medium heat. Be careful not to burn them or cook them too long, because they will get tough.
Tortillas even freeze well. If you freeze them, be sure to separate each tortilla with a sheet of parchment or plastic, so you can thaw just one or two tortillas when you need them.
