We love having hash brown bowls for breakfast. Making the shredded potatoes in the air fryer is a more hands-off way to cook them.
🧄 Very useful ingredient notes
- Frozen shredded potatoes - This method is best for the slightly thicker frozen loose shredded potatoes you can get at Aldi and Walmart. They're more like matchstick potatoes and they don't fall through the holes in the air fryer basket as easily as the thinner shredded potatoes you can get at Trader Joe's. The thinner, more delicate frozen shredded potatoes from TJ's work better being cooked in a non-stick skillet. I wouldn't use freshly shredded potatoes for this recipe, either. Those are better prepared in a skillet, too.
🔪 Instructions
Here's how to make air fryer hash browns step-by-step using frozen shredded potatoes!
- Step 1: (Optional: spray air fryer basket with oil.) Spread hash browns on air fryer basket in an even layer, then sprinkle with salt. (Optional: Lightly spray top of hash browns with oil.) Insert basket and set to air fry at 400°F for 10 minutes.
- Step 2: Check hash browns and if they are not as crispy as you like, cook another 3-5 minutes.
- Step 3: While the hash browns are cooking in the air fryer, preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add corn and spinach and use tongs to stir and toss gently to allow the spinach to wilt. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Step 4: Cook over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes or until spinach is just wilted and corn is hot. Add tomatoes and cook another 1 minute.
This is what it looks like if you use a pod-style air fryer with a pull-out drawer:

Expert Tips
- You can skip the spray oil if you:
- Have a non-stick air fryer basket
- Use parchment paper to line a metal (or other not non-stick) basket
- This method of cooking hash browns works best with pod-style air fryers with a pull-out non-stick drawer, which we used to have. We now have a tray-style air fryer (the Ninja Foodi, which I love because it's more versatile and saves counter space) but it's not the best for hash browns.
