🧄 Ingredient notes
- Ground cinnamon - The most prominent flavor in pumpkin pie spice blends and also really common. Use a good quality cinnamon. We buy Kirkland's Saigon cinnamon from Costco for everyday recipes. And, keep some of the incredibly vibrant single-origin royal cinnamon from Burlap & Barrel on hand for small recipes or special occasions.
- Ground nutmeg - The 2nd most prominent flavor in pumpkin pie spice.
- Ground ginger - Dried ginger is used in a small amount to add a little spiciness and zing.
- Ground cloves - Cloves are also used in a small amount - too much would be overpowering
🔪 Instructions
- Step 1: Add all ingredients to a small bowl.
- Step 2: Stir to mix. Store spice blend in a small airtight container for up to one year.
📋 Substitutions and variations
Here are some suitable substitutes for pumpkin pie spice in a recipe:
- Chinese five spice powder - substitute 1:1 in a recipe. It may become your new favorite!
- Apple pie spice - substitute 1:1 in a recipe
- Ground cinnamon - in a pinch, just use cinnamon. It's the most prominent spice in pumpkin pie spice anyway. The flavor won't be as well-rounded and it'll taste like it's "missing something" but will work if you don't have everything you need to make your own.
- Blend up whole spices - Do you have whole cinnamon sticks, whole nutmeg and whole cloves? Blend up each individual spice in a spice blender, clean coffee grinder, high speed blender or mortar and pestle. Then, you'll have the ground spices you need! And, your kitchen will smell AMAZING.
