Boxes of instant oatmeal are so convenient and tasty. When you start reading the ingredients, though, they don't look as appetizing.
The good news is that its easy to make peaches n' cream oatmeal at home. It's just as easy as making apple pie oatmeal or simple maple oatmeal with bananas.
🧄 Very useful ingredient notes

- Peaches - Canned peaches in 100% fruit juice (no added sugar) are my first choice for this recipe. If you buy the little plastic fruit cups of diced peaches, you don't have to prep at all - just open and pour in the pan. If using canned peaches, this recipe calls for ½ can of sliced canned peaches. You'll just need to dice them. This can be done in the pan with a spatula or wooden spoon, since they are tender. Or, you can pour them into a bowl and cut with a knife, then pour in the pan. If you want to use frozen or fresh peaches, see guide below for details.
- Peach preserves - This is the secret ingredient for maximum peachy flavor! Choose whatever peach preserves you'd like and can find at the store. The peach preserves also sweeten the oatmeal.
- Vanilla yogurt - this is an optional for added creaminess. Depending on the yogurt you choose, it can add a slightly sour taste (it is yogurt after all). So, if that is off-putting to you, skip it! The milk and oats make the recipe plenty creamy without it.
Canned, Frozen or Fresh Peaches?
I'll always tell you to use what you have on hand first. But, there's a reason my first choice is canned peaches for this recipe.
- Canned Peaches - Using canned peach slices (or the little cups of diced peaches) seem to make the oatmeal taste more of peaches, since we use the juice they were preserved in. They are also affordable, need no or very little prep and they last a really long time in the pantry, so you can make this whenever the mood strikes. Buy peaches canned in fruit juice with no added sugar. Make recipe as-is if using canned peaches.
- Frozen Peaches - If you can find them, frozen peaches are a delicious option, too. They last longer than fresh, but you have to thaw and carefully cut them, unless you're okay with the big pieces in your oatmeal. Pro: just one ingredient - peaches! How to make this recipe with frozen peaches: thaw and cut peaches. Increase milk by ¼ cup. Double preserves for sweetness and more peach flavor.
- Fresh Peaches - Fresh peaches require a little more prep, since you'll need to pit them and remove the skins. But, they surely are delicious. If you have an abundance of fresh peaches, use them to make this oatmeal one morning for breakfast. And, freeze or can the rest for later! How to make this recipe with fresh peaches: pit, peel and dice peaches. Increase milk by ¼ cup. Double preserves for sweetness and more peach flavor.
🔪 Instructions
Here's how to make dairy-free peaches and cream oatmeal step-by-step!

- Step 1: To a small-medium pan, add milk, peaches (with juice), peach preserves and salt. Bring to a low boil over medium-high heat.

- Step 2: As soon as it starts to bubble, stir in the oats. Cook over medium heat until thickened, about 5-10 minutes.

- Step 3: It should look like this when it's done. It will continue to thicken as it cools.

- Step 4: Transfer to bowl and top with vanilla yogurt and pecans, if using. Enjoy!
Expert Tips
- If using canned peaches, definitely use the syrup/juice to the oatmeal for sweetener and more peach flavor.
- Don't worry if the milk looks like it's separating a little bit. Almond milk does that. Just turn the heat down a little.
