This dressing inspired the apple dijon vinaigrette (oil-free, also!) that goes on my copycat Chick-fil-a kale crunch salad. You might want to give that a try, too.

🧄 Ingredient notes
- Honey - for sweetness. Honey is not vegan, so if you're looking for a 100% vegan dressing, use another liquid sweetener. Brown rice syrup would be my first choice, because it has similar thickness, consistency and sweetness to honey, but it can be hard to find. Agave nectar and maple syrup are other good choices, but you may need to use less, since they tend to be sweeter than honey. They are also thinner, so the dressing won't be quite as thick.
- Dijon mustard - For tang, flavor and to help emulsify the dressing.
- Red wine vinegar - For brightness and acidity.
- Whole grain mustard - For extra tang and texture. If you want the dressing to be smooth, sub this for extra dijon or yellow mustard.
🔪 Instructions
The easiest way to mix this dressing up is to use a mason jar. Pick a mason jar that will hold at least 12 ounces. A pint or quart mason jar will both work.
- Step 1: Add all the ingredients to the mason jar
- Step 2: Screw on the lid tightly and then shake it up! If you don't have a mason jar, you can add all the ingredients to a medium sized bowl and whisk them together.
Looking for mason jars? I use them for everything! And, especially for combining and storing sauces, dressings and condiments. You can usually find them in the grocery store or Walmart.
❓ FAQ
This dressing will last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator in a sealed container. The glass mason jar you used to mix it up is the perfect container to store it. Just put a lid on it and put it in the refrigerator with your other salad dressings.
Honey will make the dressing thicker, but is not vegan. If you don't eat honey, then I would recommend using maple syrup, brown rice syrup or agave nectar to sweeten this dressing. You may need less of the alternate sweeteners, since they tend to taste sweeter than honey.
No. Honey is not considered vegan because it is an animal product. To make this dressing vegan, use maple syrup, brown rice syrup or agave to sweeten it.
Yes. Most plant-based diets allow honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, dates and other sweeteners.

Struggling to find a salad dressing that isn t loaded with oil or unnecessary fats and sugar? Well, look no further. I have two fantastic salad dressing recipes for you that are free of added oil and sugar! The first one, is reminiscent of Thousand Island dressing which my husband has renamed crack because of its addictive quality. Too funny huh? The second is a creamy take on honey mustard dressing. This will hopefully help you all along and keep you from getting salad boredom.

What is whole grain mustard
Abi Cowell says
Hi Arlee,
So sorry for the delay in getting back to you! Whole grain mustard is not blended, so you still see all the little mustard seeds in the mustard. There are different varieties in the shops, but a couple of brands I have used here in the states are: Maille, Inglehoffer, Grey Poupon. Whole grain mustard is more mild than yellow or dijon, in my opinion. But, you can substitute a dijon mustard in this recipe, just use less, taste it and add more to your taste.
Hope that helps!

I had homemade date paste in the fridge so I added 2T of that and it also helped to thicken it.
